Pompey Poised For Striker Signing?

It is now being widely reported that Portsmouth are to sign striker Craig Westcarr who is currently a free agent after being released by Walsall despite being their top goalscorer last season.

The 29-year-old was supposedly released by the Saddlers because manager Dean Smith wants his younger strikers to develop and could only do that by letting his more senior striker go.

Westcarr may have been prolific last season having scored 17 times in League One but that was his personal best and his goal ratio isn't actually that great, averaging a goal every four or five games. Having said that, he tends to do his best work playing just behind the main striker and can supply other players to score rather than going it alone.

Fans of Craig's previous clubs say that he is lazy but is good at poaching goals out of nothing. With Holmes, Wallace and Fogden to do the running around him, he could be a good fit for Andy Awford's new look team.

Pompey are reported to have beaten Port Vale to his signature so his signing may be confirmed next week.
