Pompey Make Double Signing

Andy Awford has completed the signings of Stevenage midfielder James Dunne and goalkeeper Michael Poke from Torquay United.

Dunne, 24, is an energetic defensive midfielder who will alway put a shift in and is capable of scoring goals from the edge of the box too. He spent the second half of last season on loan at St Johnstone having fallen out with Graham Westley at Stevenage but is generally highly regarded by their fans.

It is believed that Pompey have paid a five figure sum for Dunne and he has signed a two-year contract with the option of an extra year.

Poke, 28, began his career at Southampton and had been loaned out at numerous clubs with several spells at Torquay before joining them permanently in 2012. The Gulls' relegation to the Conference has meant they can no longer afford to keep Poke at the club and so Awford has taken him off their hands, although it looks like he'll be backup to Paul Jones.

With two new goalkeepers signed up it was always likely that Trevor Carson would not be returning and he is now set to join Cheltenham Town.

The two signings today have taken the total signing count this summer to five with Nicky Shorey and Jed Wallace also signing new contracts. Simon Ferry excluded, Pompey haven't lost any player who had the potential to make a major difference this coming season so it seems to be a positive transfer window so far.

Awford is also reported to be lining up a lone move for 21-year-old Swindon forward Miles Storey who scored three goals in 21 games, though he spent most of his time out on the wing last season. He could well be the next man to join Pompey's revamped squad.

It's always interesting to see what other League Two clubs are also getting up to during the summer at this time to see who might be challenging Pompey for promotion (hopefully!) with two supposed "Pompey targets" in Matt Tubbs and Adebayo Akinfenwa forming a potent strike partnership for AFC Wimbledon whilst Plymouth have lost influential midfielder Conor Hourihane to Barnsley.

It's going to be another hard season looking at some of the players the other League Two clubs are signing but the initial prospects of Pompey's new recruits look good so let's hope they deliver.
