Pompey Keep Hopes Alive

Last updated : 06 December 2009 By Jim Bonner
Pompey have kept their hopes of Premier League survival with a laboured, but crucial victory over Burnley.

Strangely enough that was our worst performance at Fratton Park for the whole season and I can't stress enough how dire we were in the first half yesterday. If Burnley's strikers knew how to finish we could have been two or three down before the break.

I don't know why we were so bad but Pompey just did not look like a team. Tal Ben-Haim didn't look comfortable at centre back as his clearances went straight back to the opposition and you'd have to be a calculator to count the amount of misplaced passes from our out-fought midfield in the first half.

Despite this, Phil Dowd gifted Pompey an opportunity to take the lead after awarding a penalty for Hermann Hreidarsson's "fall" in the box. The Icelandic defender stated in an interview that it wasn't a penalty and he simply tripped and didn't appeal for it.

Of course, only he'll know if he is telling the truth but Hermann doesn't seem like the sort of player to go down in the box looking for a penalty, no matter how desperate our situation is, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt this time.

Aruna Dindane obviously thought it wasn't a penalty as he struck his spot kick straight at Brian Jensen and then just to ensure justice was done, he headed the rebound straight into the arms of the grateful Burnley 'keeper.

That compounded a miserable first half for Pompey and the team were booed off at half-time as we could, and should have been losing given the amount of chances Burnley had failed to take.

Pompey didn't really improve much in the second half until the King made his entrance. Say what you like about Kanu, but he has bailed us out of many a tight situation in the past and did so again yesterday as he added an extra touch of class to the team.

His impact was felt, as he played a huge part in getting the ball to Hermann Hreidarsson who produced a strikers finish from a tight angle to give Pompey an undeserved lead, especially as Asmir Begovic produced two superb saves from long range to stop Burnley taking the lead before the goal.

Pompey made the game safe as Dindane headed in Jamie O'Hara's cross with five minutes to go. He might not have even played because there was a clause in his contract that forced Pompey to buy him for £4 million once he made another appearance for the club.

Club officials managed to re-negotiate the terms of the deal with Lens so that he could play and whilst this sort of news would usually bemuse me, I've become used to these sort of "surprises" during my time supporting Pompey.

That win took Pompey off the bottom of the league for a couple of hours until Wolves won later in the day to put Pompey back there. The good news is that the gap between ourselves and safety has been cut to four points but here comes the bad news...

Sunderland (A)
Chelsea (A)
Liverpool (H)
West Ham (A)
Arsenal (H)
Fulham (A)

They are Pompey's next six fixtures. How many points do you see from them? None if we play like we did yesterday but this is where Avram Grant will earn his money (provided Pompey have enough to pay him of course!).

West Ham away is a game we have to win and we're still going to have to take points from Sunderland and Liverpool to give ourselves a chance of survival come January.

And that doesn't take into account the likely nasty off-the-pitch surprises that await Pompey fans in the future. But for now, we should be thankful that we still have hope of staying in the Premier League.
