Former Portsmouth manager Tony Pulis signed striker Lee Mills from Bradford for a then club record £1.2million last August and the final payment for the transfer was due today.

But Portsmouth did not meet the deadline, leaving Bradford with no choice but to call in the Football League for assistance.

The League have banned the south coast club from making any transfers until the money owed to Bradford is repaid in full.

New director of football Harry Redknapp and Pompey manager Graham Rix completed moves for four players only last week, including the club record £1.25million signing of Queens Park Rangers striker Peter Crouch.

Football League spokesman Denis Signy confirmed those signings had gone through but added that no further deals can be completed until the outstanding money is paid.

Signy said: "There has been a transfer embargo placed on Portsmouth from today which relates to money owed to Bradford.

"The deals for Peter Crouch and three other players have been completed and ratified by the Football League but all the paperwork and conditions for transfers has to go through the League and complied to."
