Pompey Held By Albion In Frustrating Draw

Last updated : 15 April 2009 By Jim Bonner
Pompey will be rueing more dropped points at home against a team most people expected them to beat yesterday. Failure to beat the worst team in the division has now cranked up the pressure and raised questions on Paul Hart's tactical selections.

It had all begun so well when Jermaine Pennant did very well to give the ball to Younes Kaboul on the right allowing the Frenchman to run the ball into the box and superbly rifle it into the top corner of the net. Niko Kranjcar had stung the post earlier and it looked like we may be in for a comfortable afternoon.

But there were always signs that our defence could crumble yesterday as in the first half as a defensive mix up allowed James Morrison a free shot at goal which David James managed to deal with and had to be called into action again when Zuiverloon had a clear opportunity to score.

And Albion did equalise at the start of the second half when David James's weak clearance fell to Morrison who struck the ball at the Pompey 'keeper only for the ball to fall to Jonathan Greening who slotted in from close range. James may have got to that one if it wasn't for a couple of Pompey defenders getting in his way but it was an awful goal to concede.

There was nothing Jamo could do about the second goal after Hayden Mullins brought down a West Brom player outside the box and Chris Brunt fired the ball into the net with the aid of a deflection off Graham Dorrans.

Thankfully Pompey were on level terms almost immediately after Niko Kranjcar curled in a brilliant free kick of his own. That should have given us an incentive but Paul Hart didn't make any attacking substitutions until the third minute of stoppage time when Theofanis Gekas was brought on for all of thirty seconds.

Whether that was a time wasting change to ensure we didn't lose or just a slap in the face to a player who has made his opinions known since being at the club, the change was absolutely pointless as we had to settle for a draw against the bottom team in the league.

I've heard plenty of complaints about Paul Hart's tactics and our midfield today and I'm in agreement with most of what the other Pompey fans are saying. I'm not complaining about Hart's starting XI as you can't really change a successful formation but following the disappointing result I think he has really got to shake things up now.

Firstly, either play David Nugent in his proper position or drop him altogether. Once again he was ineffective on the left and we need to play someone there who can have a positive influence on the game. Nadir Belhadj can play the role or perhaps Niko Kranjcar can play there and we can play two up front?

Then we move on to the most uncreative midfield of all time in Hayden Mullins and Richard Hughes. I fail to see why Mullins, a player who can only pass backwards and gives away free kicks, can get into the side ahead of Angelos Basinas. Hughes is only slightly better but at least he knows how to get stuck in.

I hope Hart can see what every other Pompey fan sees and gives Basinas a game next week against Bolton. Here's hoping that Sean Davis returns quickly and I'd never thought I'd say this but we are really missing Papa Bouba Diop in the centre of the park too.

Pennant was OK but for all those who slate Niko Kranjcar on a regular basis only need to look at yesterday's game to see how superior he is to the rest of our midfield. He was probably our best player along with Younes Kaboul yesterday and we'll need the Croat to keep those performances up as the season draws to a close.

Football is a funny game isn't it? We got what we thought was a good point at Hull last week yet dropped two places in the league yet we got a bad point yesterday yet jumped two positions to 14th as every result went our way.

That's what makes the draw so frustrating. If we had won what looked the most winnable game of the season on paper we would now be 6 points clear of the drop and could breathe much easier.

We didn't and now there is huge pressure on us to beat Bolton next week which won't be easy and if we don't win that one then I really fear for our future.

Pompey Player Ratings

David James: 5 - Distribution was awful and made a bad mistake for their first goal despite making a couple of good saves.

Younes Kaboul: 8 - Impressive goal and I feel for him as he'll be out of the side when Johnson returns next week.

Sylvain Distin: 6 - Made a couple of good challenges and tidied up well.

Hermann Hreidarsson: 6 - Solid as usual.

David Nugent: 5 - Ineffective yet again.

Niko Kranjcar: 8 - Creative spark and scored a cracking free kick.
