Pompey Grind Out Point At Newcastle

Last updated : 27 April 2009 By Jim Bonner
The script was written for a nailed on Toon victory but a gritty and organised Pompey side prevented what many fans believed to be the inevitable as they came away from St. James' Park with a precious point.

Alan Shearer and his team were so desperate for the win that I thought that they would get it but massive credit goes to Paul Hart and Brian Kidd for making Pompey hard to break down yet again, even if it wasn't good to watch.

Chances were few and far between as both sides constantly gave the ball away and Mike Riley kept blowing his whistle to stop any flow the game may have had. Obafemi Martins wasted a glorious opportunity to give the Geordies the lead by firing over from around 8 yards out.

Michael Owen had an even better chance to score in the second half as the ball broke kindly for him but he struck his shot straight at a sprawling David James who made up for his earlier error when he dropped a simple cross but no Newcastle player could capitalise on that.

Pompey turned the game in their favour when Jermaine Pennant came on and his pass set up Peter Crouch in front of the goal with no defenders to beat but he spurned our best chance of the game by shooting tamely straight at Steve Harper.

But Crouch may have had a penalty after Fabricio Coloccini brought him down in the area. I thought it was a penalty but Mike Riley didn't and so Newcastle were let off the hook.

And we may have won the game at the end and made all of our late pressure count as Richard Hughes' header hit the post whilst Glen Johnson also shot wide a couple of times in the second half.

But a draw was a fair result and it's a much better point for us than it is for them as it keeps Pompey 7 points clear of Newcastle in 18th and we have a superior goal difference.

I really worry for Newcastle after that game. We were organised but they didn't have any creativity at all to break us down and if we weren't in trouble ourselves and shown some more positivity then I'm sure we would have won.

A point is good enough though so congratulations to everyone in a blue shirt today. The performance lcontained little quality but the players showed a lot of fight and an organisation that was severely lacking under Tony Adams.

Their hard work tonight has almost assured Pompey of Premier League status for next season. Bring on the Arsenal!
