Pompey Grab Gyepes

Gabor Gyepes is the latest defender to join the ranks of Portsmouth FC, signing a one-month-deal with the club.

The 31-year-old was a free agent having been released from Hungarian side Vassas and had trained with Pompey previously, although Michael Appleton didn't sign him up at the time.

The former Cardiff centre back has received international clearance and is available for the match against Crawley on Sunday.

As one defender arrives, it seems like another is going to leave as Paul Connolly is set to return to Leeds early.

Another groin injury looks like it may keep him out of action beyond September 18th, the date which Connolly's loan deal expires. Therefore, Appleton wants to send him back to his parent club and free up another space for a loanee in his squad, having currently used all five.

There may well be another defender coming into the club as Hermann Hreidarsson is on trial at Pompey after revealing that he will play for the club for free.

At 38-years-old, the Hermannator doesn't have much playing time left in his career and it was clear to see his legs were going before he left Pompey in January 2011.

Whilst he is a great character and may love the club, it is difficult to make a case for a player who almost certainly isn't good enough any more given the demanding rigours of League One hoof...sorry, football.

Think about it, most Pompey fans would play for their club for free if they could. When I play football I stand in midfield and act like a brick wall and on the rare occasion I do get the ball, I can pass it a few yards sideways or even backwards.

You could call me a younger, more talented version of Richard Hughes but I won't be expecting a phone call from Michael Appleton any time soon.

So, whilst the Iceman won't offer much as a player he could certainly come to Portsmouth to coach our younger players. Hermann was always one of our most under-rated players and could surely teach the likes of Kevin Long and Josh Thompson a thing or two.
