Pompey Go Down Fighting

Last updated : 26 August 2007 By Jim Bonner
Portsmouth's undefeated start to the season came to an end after Frank Lampard's goal on the half hour gave Chelsea a win that they really had to work for.

Pompey fans can be proud of the performance today as we gave as good as we got for most of the game. I'd go as far to say that we were the better side for the opening 30 minutes because we were keeping the ball well and had carved out the best opportunity in the game when Taylor's strike outside the box went agonisingly wide of the post.

We'll be disappointed in the way we conceded though as nobody tracked Framk Lampard's run that followed Drogba's knockdown and his long range shot went straight under David James. The England 'keeper will not have been happy letting that in with Paul Robinson's place in dispute, though he claims the ball took a deflection off of Hreidarsson.

Still, come the second half we continued to press forward. Gary O'Neil had a couple of good shots whilst we may have had a penalty when John Terry was all over Kanu in the box.

The best chance came right at the end when David Nugent's shot was blocked in the box and after a bit of a mess in the box, Hermann Hreidarsson headed the ball in what was surely going to be an empty net but Ashley Cole's diving header cleared the ball off the line to deny us the draw we probably deserved.

The other positives to take from this game were the defensive performances of Sol and Sylvain who made up ground time and time again, especially Campbell who made a couple of excellent last ditch tackles. The midfield also did their jobs very well, with Muntari shining in the centre.

As a team we also limited Chelsea to few clear cut opportunities, the only ones I can remember where Pizzaro's chance at the start of the match and a couple towards the end when the game was stretched as we played a 4-2-4 formation in search of an equaliser.

I'll have to eat a slice of humble pie as I thought we were going to go to Chelsea and defend but credit to Harry for fielding a positive side and really having a go. If we play like this against Arsenal next week then we could take a point, maybe even a win from them.

To be disappointed at a 1-0 defeat away to Chelsea is more evidence to show how far we've come in recent times.
