Pompey Given Football Lesson By Arsenal

Last updated : 23 August 2009 By Jim Bonner
Pompey were torn apart at The Emirtaes Stadium yesterday and it could easily have been a cricket score if it wasn't for a string of fine saves from David James.

Pompey fans might have felt hard done by because of a few questionable referee decisions but replays have since shown that Utaka tripped himself up when being chased by Gallas and any offside decisions that might have gone in our favour were marginal.

The bottom line is that Pompey didn't close down the Arsenal players anywhere near quickly enough and paid the price by allowing them too much room to play their excellent attacking game that our defence couldn't cope with.

Eduardo left Marc Wilson for dead on the left and cut the ball back for the unmarked Abou Diaby who struck in the opener. Pompey didn't learn their lesson soon after because one Cesc Fabregas pass turned defence into attack and once again Diaby was left unmarked for an easy second.

All hope seemed lost and I was more interested in the "banter" between the over-aggressive Pompey fans on my left and the Arsenal fans on my right (aren't we supposed to be friends, united in our dislike for Tottenham?) so credit to the stewards for not being over zealous and ejecting people needlessly.

As the abuse was continuing, hope did return when Younes Kaboul outjumped Manuel Almunia to head in Nadir Belhadj's cross. Finally, we had scored a goal and looking back on the match we caused Arsenal more problems than we did against Fulham and Birmingham combined.

We held out until half-time but my hope disappeared once more after Gallas scored a goal that he hardly knew about from an Arsenal free kick. Paul Hart complained that Gallas should have been sent off but as previously mentioned, replays showed that Utaka tripped himself up and even I could see that from where I was sitting.

Aaron Ramsey added a fourth after Aaron Mokoena played him onside and then David James had to be replaced by Asmir Begovic to add insult to injury. Thankfully, it doesn't look like Jamo will be out too long because we'll need him based on how well he played yesterday.

The Pompey players can take some credit for trying to get one back despite being 4-1 down. Freddie Piquionne looked useful on the flank and Utaka wasted a couple of great opportunities late on to restore some pride.

I can't understand why Paul Hart opted to play Kanu in midfield and once again left Angelos Basinas to rot on the bench. The former Arsenal man did OK but we needed more bite against the Gunners as well as someone who could pass the ball better than Kranjcar who was only average again yesterday.

Portsmouth are now 19th in the league and this coming week is going to be one of the most important in Pompey's recent history. We need the takeover to happen and we need at least four or five players brought in during the week without losing Distin or James to give us a fighting chance.

If this doesn't happen, you might as well relegate us now.
