Pompey Fined Over Benjani Transfer

Portsmouth FC have been fined £15,000 for breaching regulations regarding the transfer of Benjani Mwaruwari from Auxerre and to Manchester City.

Agent Willie McKay has also been punished with a suspended two year ban should he break the rules again whilst Pompey will receive another 15 grand fine if they do the same.

The fine relates to a breach of regulations which state that an agent cannot represent a player during two consecutive transfer deals for two different clubs. An independent regulatory commission have found that McKay represented Benjani for his transfer to Pompey from Auxerre and from Pompey to Man City.

Commision chairman Paul Gilroy QC stated that both the club and McKay were aware of the rules when they came into effect and will hope that this punishment serves as a warning not to do it again. Club officials have said that the commision ignored the evidence put to them, stating that they had no idea McKay had received a fee when Benjani joined from Auxerre.
