Pompey Finally Sign Fernandes

Last updated : 30 August 2006 By Jim Bonner
Concluding the transfer saga that has seemingly gone on forever, 20 year-old Portugese international Manuel Fernandes has signed for Pompey on loan from Benfica. The deal could be made permanent in January if Fernandes keeps his fitness up, having has recent problems with injury.

Benfica fans are sorry to see one of their star players go. Dubbed "Manelele" due to the likeness of his play to that of Chelsea star Claude Makelele, Fernandes is hailed as one of the brightest young stars in Portugese football. He can play as a holding midfielder in front of the back four but he also possesses attacking talent, having scored some wonderful goals for his previous club. If he can get over his injury problems, I think it's safe to say we have a diamond of a player.

Having said that, it's doubtful we will see Fernandes until October at the earliest, as he is nowhere near match fitness. I hope he doesn't do an "Mbesuma"! He's only on loan anyway, and there is a reported get out clause in the deal that says that Fernandes can be sent back to Benfica if he fails to get over his injury. It's completely understandable why the club only have him on loan because of the injuries, it would be a very expensive risk to take if we were to sign him permanently. I do have very high hopes for Manuel though and he could be a great asset to Pompey when finally fit.

Pompey are reportedly after Andy Cole too and other names are also being bandied about. The one that has caught my eye is Steed Malbranque. What a quality signing he would be if we could land him!

The transfer window shuts midnight tommorow, so watch this space!
