Pompey Falter At Fulham

Another game, same old sob story.

The events of this game summed up why I'm 99% certain we'll be a Championship side next season. It's a crying shame really because our support yesterday, in numbers of 3,000+ were superb and deserve much better.

Ricardo Rocha signed in time to make the bench, whilst Avram Grant walked past the Pompey fans to rapturous applause, clearly showing that everyone is behind him as he tries to instigate the greatest of all escapes from relegation.

Pompey dominated the first half and created far more chances than their sloppy hosts, with Piquionne having the best chance by blasting straight Schwarzer. But it was us doing all the attacking, it was our players who were first to every ball and it was us who looked more likely to score.

Yet despite all of our good work and all of our attacking intent we should have fallen behind when Stefano Okaka somehow headed wide from close range. To have all the possession and attacking threat and yet to be fortunate to go in at half-time level should tell its own story.

Fulham improved in the second half but Pompey were still more than holding their own. Unfortunately, it took a silly defensive mistake to undo all the good work we had done after Belhadj was dispossessed by Damien Duff who crossed to an unmarked Jonathan Greening for an easy tap in.

Heads dropped after that and Pompey couldn't muster a decent chance in the last 10 minutes of the game which confirmed another defeat and almost certain relegation.

Much will depend on what the other clubs above us do on Saturday when we're almost certainly going to be beaten by Manchester United. For the eternal optimists, Tuesday's game with Sunderland represents the last chance saloon but even then, we have the winding-up hearing to survive on Wednesday.

There is very little hope left, but you just never know what is going to happen with this club.

Pompey Player Ratings

David James: 6 - One good save but could do little about the goal.

Steve Finnan: 6 - Solid on return to former club.

Marc Wilson: 7 - Continues to improve, could be an asset in the Championship if we don't sell him.

Tal Ben-Haim: 7 - Some good tackles and blocks.

Nadir Belhadj: 5 - Costly lapse in concentration. The sooner Tosic signs, the better.

Angelos Basinas: 8 - Makes so much difference to the midfield, don't remember him misplacing a pass.

Jamie O'Hara: 7 - A couple of wayward passes but worked hard and was willing to get forward.

Hassan Yebda: 7 - Good on his return back from Angola.

Kevin-Prince Boateng: 7 - Biggest threat on the night.

Aruna Dindane: 6 - Good on the ball but trigger-shy.

Frederic Piquionne: 6 - Created chances for himself but spurned them.
