The former Nottingham Forest player has already enjoyed a successful loan spell at Fratton Park this season but his stay was cut short when he was injured and had to return to Villa.

However, 31-year-old Stone has now joined Pompey on a permanent deal and goes straight into the squad to face Ipswich on Saturday.

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie said: "I don't need to sell Steve Stone to the Pompey public because they have seen him for themselves.

"He made a tremendous contribution in his short time here and his class, experience and quality shone through.

"We are very pleased to add Steve to our staff at an important part of the season. We have got an absolute bargain and further signals our intention to get out of this league sooner rather than later.

"It was a mad rush to sign him in time for tomorrow but we have done it and are very happy," he told the club's official website www.pompeyfc.co.uk.
