Pompey Around The World

Last updated : 26 March 2008 By Jim Bonner
There were several Pompey players in action all around the world tonight, although none of them will be too happy with how their sides performed.

David James started in goal for England in France and unfortunately gave away a clear cut penalty as he brought down Nicolas Anelka who was through on goal. He couldn't save Franck Ribery's penalty and that goal sealed a 1-0 win for France.

I think James might have done better in stopping Anelka. We're used to seeing him spread himself in the box without any hesistance to stop shots but he seemed to misjudge the pace on the ball. Here's hoping he's back to his best when he returns to Fratton Park.

Glen Johnson made a substitute appearance in the second half but didn't really do anything. In fact, the whole performance was flat with no real positives to take from the game. Fabio Capello has a lot of work to do if we're to play to our full potential.

Lassana Diarra was called up to the France squad but didn't play due to injury. Harry is keeping him safe in hopes that he will be fit for the showdown with West Brom. We've got more injuries to worry about with Hreidarsson and Aubey struggling for Saturday, so it's good to know that none of our players on international duty were injured.

Sulley Muntari featured for Ghana but lost at home to Mexico by two goals to one despite Essien giving the Black Stars the lead.

Niko Kranjcar fared slightly better as he ensured that ex-Scummer George Burley did not celebrate his first game in charge of Scotland as he scored Croatia's goal against the Scots. The game finished 1-1 after Kenny Miller had equalised.

So not a great day at the office for Pompey players then. Speaking of offices, I'm sure that we could have done with them being open tomorrow as the last batch of tickets for the Semi-Final go on sale via Ticketmaster at 6am.

Having failed in my application for phase three, I will be joining the early morning scrum tomorrow in hopes of getting my hands on a ticket. Good luck to all those trying to do the same!
