Pinch, Punch

Last updated : 01 March 2006 By Jim Bonner
The saying usually goes "Pinch punch first of the month and no returns" however I always used to return being the obvious bullt that I am. And because there's no Pompey news at all today I am once again "returning" but in a different sense.

I am returning back to this date last season and two seasons ago to compare our current plight to the teams of Pompey past. Care to join me? Then read on..

Not much more needs to be said about this season. The squad looks decent on paper but we haven't won a single league game in 2006, we're eight points from safety and have an extremely negative goal difference. Want to add insult to injury? A left back is our top scorer...

Of the squad that played this match against United only five players played against Chelsea last Saturday conveying how radically the team has changed in the space of one year.

This defeat to United would be the third in a row (Arsenal making it four the following game) however this team are twelve points better off having won four more games than our current team and conceded far less goals too. And for those Pompey fans who thought we wouldn't miss Yakubu (and I was one of them after his laziness towards the end of last season) that last stat would prove you wrong. However if you are looking for a positive take a look at this:

20th: West Brom: P: 27 W: 2 D: 12 L: 13 GD: -26 Pts: 18

That was their league position on the 1st March 2005. Seven points from safety but they managed to survive so it can be done!

1st March 2004

Premiership Table

17th: Portsmouth: P: 26 W: 6 D: 6 L: 14 GD: -11 Pts: 24

Squad used in last game and result

Portsmouth 1 Newcastle 1

Top Scorer: Yakubu (8)

Ah the nostalgia! Only Primus, Taylor and Lua Lua remain from that Pompey team who played in that defeat to Chelsea on Saturday although Andy O'Brien was playing for Newcastle that day too. On paper the side from 2004 doesn't look too bad although the subs bench is pretty laughable! This side have six points more than we do currently having played a game less but only goal difference seperated ourselves from Wolves who were directly below us in 18th. Of course we went on a run after we defeat our arch rivals and that was a catalyst for the rest of the season however without them I'm not sure what our catalyst would be to go on a run this season.

Well, that ends our trip down memory lane and maybe you even took some hope from it looking back. Now maybe tommorow there will be some proper news for me to report...
