Paper Talk

Real news has been as slow as a Teddy Sheringham sprint into the penalty area recently, so instead we have to make do mostly with gossip from Sunday's papers which are about as reliable as Lomana LuaLua.

The only real piece of news worth reporting is that Fredi Kanoute will not be joining Pompey after he pledged his future to Sevilla, an easy thing to do after he scored the winner against Getafe in the Copa Del Rey final. That pledge should dispel the News of the World's claim that we were going to sign him for £8.4 million.

However, a whole host of other strikers have been linked to Pompey via the tabloids. Most of it is probably garbage but for the record here it is:

The People claim that Pompey are after David Nugent after all and are ahead of Sunderland in the chasing pack for him because we've offered £10,000 a week more in wages than what the Black Cats have. Considering Harry Redknapp has virtually ruled out a move for the Preston striker because his asking price is too high, this is more than likely a load of bull.

The People also say that we're in for Martin Cranie; the full back who plays for our neighbours. Harry has said he is happy with his defence and so I can't see this happening either. In fact I don't see us signing any other defender this summer unless John Terry declares his undying love for Pompey.

The next striker on the list of tabloid transfer rumours is Ismael Urzaiz of Athletic Bilbao, who survived relegation from La Liga by the skin of their teeth last season. Urzaiz scored 8 times for them last season but is now 35-years-old so I think if we did sign him, we'd be scraping the barrel just as The People did thinking up this crap too.

Moving away from The People, The Sunday Mirror believes that we're in the hunt for Alan Smith having made a £3.5 million bid, which is only half of the reported £7 million the likes of Aston Villa, Sunderland and Middlesbrough are offering for him. Whilst the fee quoted is probably complete nonsense, Harry has said that Smith would be a "good value" signing and so we might be hearing more of Alan Smith in the near future.

And finally, The People (again) are "reporting" that Andrew Cole is going to drop down two divisions to play for Nottingham Forest despite him saying that he wants one more crack at the Premiership.

So what's the moral of the story today kids? Don't believe anything you read in The People.
