O'Neil, who is expected to captain the under 21 side against Ukraine tonight, has fully recovered from an injury which wrecked his season last time out and manager Harry Redknapp has stated that he is willing to loan O'Neil out - if he manages to strengthen his squad.

"There's no way I could let Gary go on loan at the moment. I haven't got enough players" said Redknapp.

"But if we get someone in, it's something we could do. I think it would do him good".

Meanwhile, Peter Taylor spoke of his decision to make the Pompey midfielder captain of the England Under-21's, commenting that he has every confidence that Gary is someone who "can handle the job well".
