Milan Reunion Ends In Victory

Pompey defeated bogey team Leicester City 3-1 at the Walkers Stadium to complete an unbeaten pre-season having won every game.

Milan Mandaric watched on as Harry Redknapp fielded a strong side with a few notable absentees as O'Neil, Utaka, Benjani, Stefanovic and Kranjcar were missing with injuries. Redknapp did say that most, if not all of them should be available for selection at Pride Park next week.

It looked like it was going to be the "same old story" after Muntari wasted a chance in the first minute and Iain Hume had put the Foxes ahead after a through ball from De Vries put him through on goal.

Portsmouth, sporting the new white away strip were level 6 minutes later when LuaLua made a run down the left and combined with Mvuemba to gift Nugent a tap in for the equaliser and it was 1-1 at the break.

Pompey took the lead after a well worked goal when Nugent and LuaLua combined well resulting in the DR Congo man slotting past the helpless Henderson just minutes after the restart.

David James was called into action a few times during the game with the pick of his saves being an excellent reaction stop from Shaun Newton. Pompey would then seal the win when substitute Franck Songo'o slotted in following an assist from LuaLua after he had beaten the Leicester defence.

Pompey had other chances but the ref ended proceedings meaning we had finished pre-season with a 100% winning record after beating Martin Allen's side 3-1.

Redknapp said after the game that he was pleased with the performance but claimed that we were too open and gave Jamo too much to do. We can't afford to be that bad in defence when we play Derby next week but on the other hand we looked good going forward, with Nugent seemingly finding his feet now.

So after 8 games with 8 wins, 20 goals scored and only 2 conceded, what has come out of it? The Asia Trophy win was nice but I think the main point is that Lomana LuaLua has now got a genuine chance of starting at Pride Park following a decent pre-season.

We shouldn't get too carried away though as pre-season results don't tend to mean anything. The performances have been good though and we've avoided major injuries to the squad. We've also got one over Fulham and Liverpool before the season has even begun which is something to brag about!

We return to the midlands in a week, but this time it'll be for real.
