Midfielder signs on deadline day

Rooneymania might have swamped the day's transfer action, but Portsmouth fans had plenty to look forward to following the closing of the transfer window as Cameroonian international Valery Mezague agreed to join Pompey on a one year loan from French side Montpellier.

Mezague, 21, will provide cover in the midfield department which is currently plagued by injuries, most notably to Amdy Faye and new signing Aliou Cisse. Mezague becomes the club's eighth summer signing, alongside Cisse, Lomana Lua-Lua, Andy Griffin, Jamie Ashdown, Diomansy Kamara, Ricardo Fuller and David Unsworth.

Mezague has played over 50 times for Montpellier, scoring eight goals. He has made a full recovery from a serious car crash in 2003 which left him on the sidelines for over four months.
