Liverpool vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 28 November 2006 By Jim Bonner
Two injury ravaged sides meet at Anfield tommorow night in a crucial Premiership game. Victory for the Reds will see them leapfrog us in the table as we could slip to 8th in the table if results go against us.

If you thought Pompey had a long list of casualties then take a look at our opposition tommorow. Bolo Zenden joins a list of midfielders out of the game that consists of Mark Gonzalez, Harry Kewell, Momo Sissoko, Xabi Alonso whilst Jermaine Pennant is also a doubt. Craig Bellamy will miss the game for being a naughty boy and ending up in court as a result. It's very likely that one of two central defenders; Jamie Carragher or Daniel Agger will be pushed forward into midfield.

Pompey go into the game with major doubts over who will play at left back. Dejan Stefanovic is having an operation, Matty Taylor is a major doubt but may feature whereas it's very unlikely that Andy Griffin will be recalled from Stoke due to his participation against Cardiff on Tuesday. It's possible that Richard Hughes could play there. He did so with Scotland y'know?

Sean Davis added to our injury woes after picking up a groin injury meaning that Manuel Fernandes could get another chance to prove his Pompey credentials. Andy Cole and Lomana LuaLua look to miss out again also. So we're pretty much down to the "bare bones" again!

I would bite your arm off if you offered me a point from this game. Liverpool have won every game at home this season bar a 1-1 draw with Blackburn. We have lost our last four league games and need to stop the rot. It's a big ask to get a result at Anfield, let alone win but I will be happy as long as we go for it.

Harry has said pre-match that we will be looking to attack Liverpool after a dire performance at Newcastle. I know I will be hacked off if I see us play 4-5-1 tommorow. A negative style does not suit us at all and who knows? If we go at their weakened midfield we might be able to spring a surprise.

Be sure to check out my preview on the official Liverpool website soon too!

Premiership Past: Liverpool vs Pompey

03/04: Liverpool 3 Pompey 0

Didi Hamann hit a wondervolley and Michael Owen netted a brace to ensure Pompey didn't repeat their FA Cup heroics at Anfield a couple of months previously.

04/05: Liverpool 1 Pompey 1

After a dour first half Steven Gerrard hammered a thunderbolt of a free kick past Jamie Ashdown that looked to have earnt Liverpool the win. But in the dying minutes Lomana LuaLua leapt to nod in a close range header from a cross to earn us a share of the spoils and silence the gloating scousers!

05/06: Liverpool 3 Pompey 0

Despite a couple of strokes of luck, Liverpool won this game at a canter in Alain Perrin's final match in charge of Pompey. Andy Griffin was unlucky to give away a penalty and although Crouch missed, the cheers were short lived as Bolo Zenden tucked in the rebound. Djibril Cisse then overhit the most blatant cross you'll ever see into the back of the net to double Liverpool's lead.

Fernando Morientes added a third in the second half but by then the Pompey fans didn't care as some were chanting "We want Perrin out" whilst others voiced their displeasure at these chants. A truly miserable day.
