King Kanu Nets Hat-Trick In Benefit Match

The final match at Fratton Park was a fitting way to salute Kanu for his winning goal at Wembley as Joe Jordan's Pompey XI beat Tony Adams' Friends of Kanu side 8-6 last night.

Considering the frustrating matches and lack of goals at Fratton this season, this exhibition was refreshing to watch and it was great for the crowd to pinch themselves when the FA Cup was paraded in front of the Fratton End with blue ribbons tied to the handles.

The Pompey XI side contained the likes of Begovic, Campbell, Kranjcar, Diarra, Pamarot, Diop, Hughes, Mvuemba and Kanu himself.

The cup final scorer has some pretty popular friends such as Ipswich's Danny Haynes, West Ham's Anton Ferdinand & Carlton Cole, John Utaka and Lomana LuaLua who returned to Fratton Park for the first time since leaving for Greece. Christopher Kanu also featured for the opposition.

If I remember correctly, the Friends of Kanu team stormed into a two goal lead with Haynes and Cole scoring. Richard Hughes got one back with a volley and Diarra equalised with an effort that goalkeeper Paul Agu should have saved.

Centre forward Sol Campbell was then brought down in the box by Agu but skewed his spot kick wide. John Utaka scored after a mazy dribble and then Cole tapped in LuaLua's square ball to make it 4-2 at half-time.

There were a whole host of changes during the second half but the goals kept coming as Carlton Cole completed his hat-trick to make it 5-2 but then Kanu turned on the style and scored twice himself before Diop actually found the net for once to level the scores at 5-5!

Kanu then performed some more tricks and completed his hat-trick before LuaLua's drive made the score equal again but a tap in from either Diop or Kranjcar and a volley from Diarra settled the score at 8-6 to end an entertaining evening.

So that's our lot for the season as far as watching Pompey is concerned and it was good to see some goals at home for once! A quite shocking stat from this season has been that barring goals scored against the relegated teams, we only managed ten goals against the other 16 teams in the division.

Now we get to look forward to who Harry is going to sign and let go in the summer, with the next date on the calendar of any significance to Pompey being August 10th when we play Man United in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Then we have our first ever UEFA Cup game to look forward to with the first game being played on September 18th and the return leg on the 2nd of October.

Lots to look forward to then!
