Kanu Finally Signs

Nwankwo Kanu has finally ended his long contract saga with Pompey after signing a new one year deal with the option of an extra year should he play a certain amount of games.

The number of games is said to be less than 20 after the Nigerian striker said that it would be near impossible to play that many games from the bench, considering his participation in the African Nations Cup will prevent him from featuring in early 2008.

I think this is a useful signing for the club if Kanu can stay fit. He was excellent during the first half of the season but fatigue got to him come 2007 and there were many games where he was ineffective. With presumably less action this season he should stay fresh throughout the entire campaign instead of suffering the burnout that hindered his performances during the second half of last season.

He does give us an extra option up front and will be useful coming on as a sub for someone to lump the ball to if we're chasing the game or for someone to hold the ball up the pitch if we're clinging onto a lead. Kanu should also strike a good understanding with fellow countryman John Utaka too.

Here's hoping he hits double figures again!
