Steve Cotterill will join the club as first team coach after his side secured a path to the second division by beating Rushden 3-1 in Cardiff on Bank Holiday Monday. The young coach is one of the brightest in the game and has recently been invited to take his UEFA coaching badge by Howard Wilkinson - only one of three who will be allowed to study this badge at the FA.

Cotterill will take lectures from Sven Goran Erikson and Bobby Robson, and also Harry Redknapp - this time on the job though. Cotterill is relishing the chance to put his wits against the nations second string and is looking forward to working with Redknapp.

One of Cotterill's first tasks, if papers are to be believed, might be to get the best out of a talented, yet very Gallic player. David Ginola is reportedly being courted by Pompey with Mandaric once again being interested in the French winger. Ginola is seen as the ideal replacement for Prosinecki but Pompey would have to find £20,000 a week to entice him to Fratton Park - on top of Merson's wage packet of course.
