Is Crouch Value For Money?

Peter Crouch is likely to start tomorrow's game against Ukraine tomorrow but has his form for Pompey justified the huge amount of money that Harry Redknapp spent on him last summer?

What have we got for our (reported) £11 million so far?

The big man has scored eleven league goals so far this season, which means that only Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard and Nicolas Anelka have found the net more times in the Premier League.

That means that Pompey have paid a million quid for each league goal so far, which is much better value than £32.5 million Robinho who has the scored the same amount as Crouch but then so has Kevin "Scummer" Davies who was relatively cheap despite previous hefty price tags.

Crouch is also our top goalscorer by a distance with 16 in all competitions; 11 in the league, 4 in the UEFA Cup and a single goal in the FA Cup. Jermain Defoe is next on that list with 9 but then there's a big gap to a group of players who just have a paltry 3 goals each; Niko Kranjcar, David Nugent, Hermann Hreidarsson and Glen Johnson.

So it's obvious that we're over-reliant on our lanky frontman to grab us the goals that will keep us in this division which is why every Pompey fan will be hoping he doesn't get injured when playing against Ukraine!

What Pete also gives us 100% in every game he has played and you can't accuse him of not working hard for the team. He may not be quick but he makes an effort to close players down and he's always back to help the defence clear a set piece if he's needed.

Crouch has come in for some criticism this season, especially when he was going through that barren spell of having not scored for over two months. There's an accusation that we play the long ball game too often this season and that for a big man he's not so good with his head but I think those accusations are a tad unfair.

Most of the goals he has scored for us have been with his head and although he has missed his fair share of "easy" chances name me one striker who doesn't. It's not really his fault that he gets penalised for petty fouls when the opposition are tugging his shirt or doubling up on him either.

I'm happy with Crouch's contribution so far this season despite his heavy price tag. I know that we would be relegated already if it wasn't for him and his goals could well save us over £40 million in the long run so I'd say he was worth sacrificing Sulley Muntari for.

Hopefully he can keep up his recent scoring record but more importantly he stays fit for the upcoming crucial games which could well determine our fate come the end of the season.

Then we'll have to try and keep hold of him when the transfer window opens...
