As I watched the friendly between "Pompey playerless" England and Spain coupled with John Motson's drab commentary I thought I would take a look at Pompey's international pedigree, to find that we don't really have that much.
Here's a list of our squad and the nationalities they represent. The number of caps they have are in brackets.
England
David James (34)
Jamie Ashdown (0)
Glen Johnson (5)
Linvoy Primus (0)
Sol Campbell (69)
Matthew Taylor (0)
Gary O'Neil (0)
Sean Davis (0)
Andy Cole (15)
Scotland
Richard Hughes (5)
Ireland
Andy O'Brien (23)
France
Noe Pamarot (0)
Arnold Mvuemba (0)
Portugal
Pedro Mendes (2)
Croatia
Niko Kranjcar (30)
Bulgaria
Svetoslav Todorov (39)
Serbia
Dejan Stefanovic (20)
Cameroon
Lauren (25)
Rodolphe Douala (13)
Franck Songo'o (0)
Mali
Djimi Traore (5)
Zimbabwe
Benjani (20)
Nigeria
Kanu (45)
DR Congo
Lomana LuaLua (14)
So, our first team currently has a total of 364 caps between them and contains 13 different nationalities (8 European, 5 African). Sol Campbell leads the way in the most capped players list and then perhaps surprisingly comes Kanu and then Toddy before David James.
Our next most capped player is Niko Kranjcar who amazingly already has 30 caps for his country at the age of 22. Niko played the whole 90 minutes in a 2-1 win for Croatia against Norway. 8 Pompey players have never been capped for their country.
A couple of other quirks:
Pompey are one of 7 Premiership clubs who could field an authentic English back five (Everton, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Watford, West Ham and Wigan being the others).
Pompey are the most African represented team in the Premiership.
What's the point in this article? Well not much really, unless you are interested in these sorts of stats. Some might say this piece has about as much point as an England Friendly Match.
What a surprise... England have lost again after another drab performance. Perhaps it's time Steve McClaren injected some Pompey prowess into the current side? (Even if we are on awful form...)
