Holmes Heads Home

Lee Holmes will return to Preston North End on January 3rd as Andy Awford has opted against extending it.

The winger made five appearances for Pompey but never really shone during his spell at Fratton Park. The decision to borrow him in the first place was baffling given that Awford had plenty of wide players available to him in his squad and Lee didn't offer anything different and wasn't significantly better than he already had.

Holmes is the third loanee to return to his parent club this week with Alex Wynter and Matt Fish also leaving. There was rumours that Miles Storey would be next to leave after he tweeted a picture of himself in a Swindon shirt claiming "you never know what's round the corner" although he soon tweeted afterwards not to read anything into it.

On the subject of players that Awford wants to keep, he has offered Dan Butler and Adam Webster new deals with their contracts up in the summer.

Personally, despite his good performance at Luton, I'm not sure Webster has what it takes to be a first-team regular for Pompey as his positional sense is poor and he's not strong enough physically.

Butler may also have his drawbacks but he does have pace and the ability to deliver a good ball. Once he learns how to defend properly, he could be an asset to the squad.

The transfer window opens on Thursday. Who knows who else will be out the door and who will come in (other than Matt Tubbs) once Awford starts wheeling and dealing?
