Hit For Six

Embarrassing, humiliating, diabolical, disastrous, soul destroying, laughable... the list of words to describe Pompey's record Premier League defeat is endless.

It was an utterly terrible performance that was appropriate for a Sunday afternoon as most of the defending was of Sunday League standard whilst the rest of the team did not perform anywhere near what they should have.

David James had another Eastlands shocker, coming miles out of his goal after his unreliable defence let Jo through. He followed that with a blunder from a cross to allow Richard Dunne to tap in a second goal and then let Ched Evans score a soft fifth and should have dealt with the cross that led to the sixth from Gelson Fernandes.

As much as Jamo takes much of the blame for yesterday's debacle the defence have also got a lot to answer for. Sylvain Distin and Sol Campbell were given the runaround whilst Armand Traore and Glen Johnson were ripped apart by Robinho and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Younes Kaboul and Nadir Belhadj should never be played in centre midfield again as both were very poor whilst Defoe and Crouch hardly figured in the game at all. In fact, the only player to come out of the game not looking terrible was Lassana Diarra.

The strange things is that we were alright once we were 2-0 down and the optimists would have thought we were unlucky not to claw a goal back before the break after Campbell had his effort cleared off the line.

Pompey came out in the second half and began attacking the City goal but it wasn't long before the defence was split by one pass and before you know it, that £32.5 million player has lashed in a third goal and the floodgates opened.

Rather than sit tight and begin Operation: Damage Limitation we continued to try and attack but the City defence had no trouble at all sniffing out the danger and then caught us time and time again on the counter-attack as the defence was exposed. It came as no surprise to see the player we had been chasing all summer bang one in as the rout became more and more embarassing.

You have to hold your hands up and say that Man City were excellent yesterday but they were aided by some terrible goalkeeping errors, a defence that was all at sea and a midfield that couldn't pass wind.

Harry Redknapp also takes his share of the blame for his poor tactical selection. I'm still not entirely sure what formation he was aiming for with the personnel he picked to start the game and when he changed things at half time it just got worse.

After the final whistle the humiliation was complete as our coach drove out of Manchester with everyone in a Sky Blue shirt giving us the "6-0" gesture. It couldn't have been worse and it ranks up there as one of the worst Pompey results in recent memory which includes the 5-0 drubbing by Birmingham and the infamous Leyton Orient result.

*Sigh*

Now the rant is out of my system we can be fortunate that we don't have to wait too long to at least try and restore some pride. The only problem is that we'll be playing a team who have already dicked us once this season and we could field a much weakened side after Redknapp admitted that most of his players can't cope with three games in a week.

It will be very interesting to see how the players respond to this defeat. The best case scenario will be to produce a shock and knock Chelsea out of the Carling Cup, beat Spurs next Sunday to keep them at the bottom of the table and then finish the job in Guimaraes to set us up for what should be a home victory against Stoke.

Of course, if the 6-0 has really damaged our confidence then we could get thrashed by Chelsea again, lose to Tottenham and then completely capitulate in Guimaraes to ensure we're knocked out of two cup competitions in a week and in a less-than-healthy league position ahead of what would be a daunting exhibition of long throws and hoof balls the following Sunday.

Whatever happens we will always look back on this 6-0 defeat and laugh because if you don't laugh then you'll cry.
