Hawks Peg Back Pompey

I took a trip to Westleigh Park last night to watch a friendly game of two halves.

The first, featuring the majority of the current first team players as well as Zimbabwean Onsimor Bhasera, was a dull affair as the lack of fitness of the team showed. Niko Kranjcar looked like the only bright spark in our side but there were hardly any chances created by either team.

In fact, the only real incident worth noting was the Havant 'keeper colliding with David Nugent, knocking him senseless for a short time. Up close it looked very nasty and in a competitive game I'm certain that the goalkeeper would have received a yellow card at least for that "challenge".

Paul Hart changed the team for a livelier second half that contained Linvoy Primus, Papa Bouba Diop and a mixture of youngsters and trialists. But it was a man released from Crewe Alexandra that stole the headlines.

Eugen Bopp, the 25-year-old Ukranian midfielder, has played for Paul Hart at Nottingham Forest and also scored twice against Pompey in a League Cup tie back in 2003.

He grabbed a brace last night amongst other trialists such as ex-Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Modeste M'Bami and another ex-PSG winger in Fabrice Pancrate.

Shaun Gale's side hit back in the last 12 minutes after Bopp gifted the hosts a goal after his very loose pass was intercepted by Mustafa Tiriyaki who fired home and shortly after that after Manny Williams dribbled the ball past the Pompey centre backs and smashed in the equaliser.

There's nothing Pompey fans can take from this friendly as it was just a fitness exercise and nothing at all can be read into the fact we only managed a draw with a non-league team.

I remember at the start of the 06/07 season when we lost 3-1 to the Hawks and then went on to have our best season for over 50 years so maybe the doom mongers should take that into account before claiming we're doomed already.

The only other things to note during the game were that it was nice to see Pompey in traditional colours again and the home shirt looks nice and simple (until they slap the sponsor on it anyway).

Also, Angelos Basinas was stood at the corner entrance to the ground eating a sandwich when John Westwood turned up drunk and late as per usual. Some kids then went to the entrance and asked for Westwood's autograph, completely ignoring the Euro 2004 winning captain! Youth these days...

Pompey's next friendly is at Basingstoke on Saturday. Hopefully we will see some new faces by then.
