Fulham vs Portsmouth Preview

Last updated : 30 January 2009 By Jim Bonner
Pompey play arguably their biggest game of the entire season at Craven Cottage tommorow knowing that a win would see them jump Fulham in the table and drag them into the relegation dogfight.

It wasn't so long ago that some pundits were tipping Roy Hodgson's side for Europe after their new found defensive strength however they have fallen down the table having only won one of their last nine games.

However, they haven't played at home in the last four games and this will be their first game at Craven Cottage in 2009 and only West Ham have gone there and won this season. So there is no doubt that this will be a hugely difficult game for a Pompey side who haven't beaten Premier League opposition since November 30th.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that we can't afford to lose this game with home games against Liverpool and Chelsea coming up as well as trips to Stoke and Manchester United so defeat tomorrow will see us well and truly in trouble.

Roy Hodgson has a near full-strength squad to pick from although former Pompey flop Diomansy Kamara is injured whilst the inspirational Jimmy Bullard, a player Pompey could well have done with, has been sold to Hull and is sure to be missed by Fulham.

Tony Adams may be without skipper Sol Campbell as he has a hip injury that forced him off against Villa whilst Nadir Belhadj's stupidity on Tuesday means he is banned so Armand Traore should take his place.

The Pompey manager was happy with the performance against Villa so it's likely he'll stick to the 4-4-2 system with Crouch and Kanu up front. If we can play that well and be a bit more clinical up front then I think we'll get a result as long as our defence can keep Andy Johnson quiet.

I don't think I'm being over-dramatic by saying that this is our biggest game of the season as defeat could see us drop to 19th in the table by the end of Saturday with a horrendous run of fixtures on the horizon.

Play Up Pompey!

Lawro: Home Win (2-1)
Sky Sports: Draw (1-1)

My Prediction: Fulham have taken 21 points from 30 at home this season and I don't think we're good enough to go there and win, but perform like we did on Tuesday and I think we can get a result because defeat is simply unthinkable.
