Fulham vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 31 March 2007 By Jim Bonner
After yet another week of boring international football it's finally back to the bread and butter of the Premiership as Pompey travel to Craven Cottage to finally put an end to this dismal run of form.

There were plenty of positives to take from the Reading game and it looks like Harry Redknapp will name an unchanged side from the team that played at the Madejski Stadium although Lauren and Noe Pamarot are available again after injury and Sean Davis is back after a ban to face his former club. Toddy might actually get a place on the bench too!

Fulham are in just as bad form as us having only won one game in twelve yet contrary to Pompey they've been finding goals harder to keep out because the likes of Montella and McBride are always a threat. Alexei Smertin should also play against his former club and is bound to receive a warm reception from the strong travelling support.

With both teams in need of points for different reasons and in pretty bad form, it wouldn't surprise me to see both sides just go for it. Clashes with Fulham have always been entertaining games (bar the scrappy 1-0 last season at our place) so let's hope that tomorrow is no different and that we actually manage to score a goal!

Our chances of Europe should be crystal clear once the result of this game is known. Let's hope Harry has a happy fifth anniversary!

Premiership Past: Fulham vs Pompey

03/04: Fulham 2 Pompey 0

Despite battering Fulham for the first half hour, Louis Saha scored twice in 3 minutes to deliver the ultimate suckerpunch in a game where we had chances to win three football matches let alone one. To make things worse Patrik Berger was sent off for swearing.

04/05: Fulham 3 Pompey 1

Things were going our way as LuaLua put Pompey ahead with a neat finish and Jamie Ashdown saved a penalty at the other end to keep us ahead at half time. Ironically it was Andy Cole who scored the equaliser and then both Brian McBride and Luis Boa Morte made the most of defensive errors from De Zeeuw and Linvoy respectively to score two late goals and end Velimir Zajec's temporary reign as Pompey boss.

05/06: Fulham 1 Pompey 3

Pompey took the lead in the first minute after Gary O'Neil capitalised from a Wayne Bridge error. Steed Malbranque equalised with a thunderbolt but Sean Davis should have given us the lead again but missed from all of two yards! Lomana LuaLua read Benjani's flick on and outpaced the Fulham defence to slot home a second goal for the visitors and then Gario got his second goal via a shot that took a deflection. Michael Brown was sent off for a dirty challenge soon after but the away end started to sing Harry Redknapp's name again as the tide was turning in the fight against relegation.
