Friday Night

Tonight Pompey could only manage an uninspiring 0-0 draw with Conference side Oxford United. Pompey dominated posession and created the better chances, especially with Matthew Taylor standing out from the rest. The main incident of the night was Lua Lua getting injured in a clash with the Oxford 'keeper.

Early indications from The Quay suggest that the injury isn't too serious although I wouldn't expect him to play against Porto. I obviously hope it's not serious, injuries are the last thing we need at the moment. I'm not too bothered about the result considering Benjani, O'Neil and Mendes all have minor injuries and understandably didn't take part today. Why risk key players in a meaningless friendly? Glen Johnson was also rested to give Noe Pamarot a chance who once again didn't cover himself with glory.

That has been my main gripe with this pre-season campaign. Our defence still looks pretty shaky and a Premiership back four should not be giving Conference sides (and lower) any sort of decent chance to score, and Oxford had their moments tonight. If we only make one buy all summer I really hope it's a commanding centre back in the Campbell/Distin mould.

One more pre-season fixture to go and it will certainly be a test this Thursday against FC Porto. I'm with the Pompey fans in terms of being frustrated at lack of signings but there's 27 days left to go of the transfer window, still enough time to get plenty of players in and I'm backing Harry to get the right signings to Fratton Park. I would like to see a new player or two come Thursday admittedly just so spirits around Pompey can be lifted. Of course, it depends who we bring in as to how excited we'll be but we'll just have to be patient on this one. I can't imagine there being too many cheers if we signed Kanu as opposed to someone like Anelka.

One player who isn't at Pompey any longer is John Viafara who has joined our good friends down the road for an undisclosed fee. In honesty I don't think he'll be missed by Pompey fans all that much. I did have high hopes for Viafara when he first signed considering how hyped he was in his own country but I think the Premiership is too fast paced for someone of his ability, considering how his passing is awful. However, Scummers might have a good Championship player on their hands considering the style of that league will be more suited to the Colombian. I would wish John luck in his future endeavours, but I just can't bring myself to do it now he has joined our rivals!

That's all for now, hopefully I'll have something more positive to report soon.
