French Connection UK

Unsurprisingly, given Perrin's managerial history, the French press are eager to link almost every single French player under the sun to Portsmouth FC these days. During Reggie's days over on the continent he was well known as a manager not afraid to give youth a chance - as we've seen in his brief tenure at Fratton - so it hardly takes a genius to work out why so many youngsters are being tipped to join the English Premier League under his command. A bit like the amount of Eastern Europeans we were linked with when Velimir was in charge, and the amount of Africans who shared the agent Willie McKay (not that I'm suggesting anything untoward of course) when Redknapp occupied the hotseat.

Speaking of Redknapp, one of the most prominent new targets is one who we were also linked with during his command, Kim Kallstrom of Rennes. He fits into a lot of the Perrin signing "stereotypes"; French league, young player and also Swedish, after Reggie's slightly random and un-prompted statement that Scandinavians were as good and committed as English players.

Elsewhere three players have been touted for a move in the French football magazine Le Foot. Sebastian Grax of Monaco has been a name floating about for a week or so now anyway, but Francois Modesto (also of Monaco) and Fabien Laurenti (of AC Ajaccio) have been added to the roster. Apparently Perrin and Didier Deschamps are a bit chummy, hence us playing Monaco in pre-season and now seemingly being interested in half their players.

And just to show their English counter-parts that they too can start to delve into the more silly side of rumoursville, the French press also reckon we might get Dugarry and Djorkaeff as coaches. I don't doubt we will bring in new coaches but quite why we'd want to bring in a couple of mercurial talents who don't (to my knowledge) have any coaches badges, or indeed much to commend them at all other than the fact they're French - and in the eyes of many even that isn't something worth commending - remains to be seen.

Nice to hear rumours of us being active anyway, to couple the supposed signings already of Dellas and Basinas. As told by The Quay, who told us that Brian Little was the next Portsmouth manager officially. Still, who am I to poke fun. I said on here that Nigel Quashie would never move to Southampton.
