Fratton Faithful Awards 2007: Results: Part I

Last updated : 19 June 2007 By Jim Bonner
Ladies and Gentlemen, it's time to reveal the winners and losers of this year's Fratton Faithful Awards. A big thank you to everyone who voted, there was a far more diverse selection of nominees this time round so all votes made a contribution in one way or another.

Anyway, here are the results so try and contain your excitement!

Pompey Player of the Season

This was a two horse race between England's Number 1 in David James and Mr. Reliable - Linvoy Primus.

WINNER: DAVID JAMES

The Pompey shot stopper has won many accolades this season, having scooped up pretty much every award from the club going and the Fratton Faithful award for Player of the Season is no different. Jamo's performances kept us in games we otherwise would have lost and stopped us getting embarrassed at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford. Only the game at Ewood Park is a blot on an otherwise outstanding campaign, yet Steve McClaren still overlooks him...

Worst Pompey Player of the Season

There were a fair few nominees for this award. The frustrating nature of Lomana LuaLua got him nominated whilst our mistake prone left backs in Djimi Traore and Dejan Stefanovic were also candidates for this award. Other inept performers for this one included Noe Pamarot, Ognjen Koroman, Andy Cole, Roudolphe Douala, Glen Johnson and even Sean Davis could not escape the wrath of the Pompey fans. There can only be one winner though and that is....

WINNER: ANDREW COLE

Pompey fans had high expectations of the 35-year-old when he signed, thinking he could be the one to poach us many goals through the season. However a season full of injury and lack of fitness saw him only score three goals and show what quality he had nowhere near often enough. He was eventually shipped off to Birmingham and nobody missed him.

Signing of the Season

There were three candidates for this award. Kanu surprised everyone who had so low expectations of him, scoring 12 goals in the season but now looks to be off. Sol Campbell had a major effect on our defence and forged an excellent partnership at the back with Linvoy whilst David James was also inevitably nominated.

WINNER: DAVID JAMES

Jamo edged out Campbell by just a single vote, proving just how highly the Pompey fans think of him.

Flop Signing of the Season

Despite the nominations of David Thompson, Ognjen Koroman and Djimi Traore, this award was contested by underwhelming striker Andrew Cole and Roudolphe Douala; who was built up so much by Harry Redknapp that when he got on the pitch, Pompey fans were even more frustrated when he did nothing. It was a close call but the winner is...

WINNER: ANDREW COLE

That's two awards each for Jamo and Cole now, but Andrew probably won't be happy with the two worst awards he could have been given. The Pompey fans have spoken and our Number 8 was truly our worst player last season, and it shows us how far we have come to call the 2nd top scorer in Premiership history our worst player!

Pompey Goal of the Season

Matthew Taylor's stunning strikes against Everton, Arsenal and Newcastle were all nominated as were Niko Kranjcar's sublime curler against Fulham and Lomana LuaLua's strike against Charlton, although that was nominated for it's significance as it put us clear at the top of the Premiership. There was only going to be one winner though...

WINNER: MATTHEW TAYLOR VS EVERTON

The ball breaks lose after a challenge and floats into Matty Taylor's path on the halfway line, one stunning volley later and Tim Howard is looking at the back of the net with a look on his face which just says "What....the....hell!?" We were all saying the same when the BBC didn't even include this goal in their overall Goal Of The Season competition when it probably would have won.

Pompey Miss of the Season

Gary O'Neil's misses against West Ham (H) and Everton (A) gained some votes as did Kanu's penalty double miss against Blackburn. Other misses to gain the recognition of Pompey fans were Andy Cole's against Chelsea. Taylor hitting the post and two misses at Craven Cottage from Richard Hughes and Sean Davis. There were a couple of humerous suggestions included such as the loss of the fans' marquee for the first half of the season and Amanda Lamb (Nope, I don't know who she is either. Someone please enlighten me!) There is one miss that stands head and shoulders above the rest though...

WINNER: BENJANI VS READING

If memory serves me correctly Kanu had the whole Reading defence beaten and played a square ball to Benjani who has an open goal from no more than 3 yards out only to completely miss the target as all the Pompey fans watching just cannot believe their eyes!

Pompey Save of the Season

David James produced some fine saves during the season and the best of them were nominated for this award. His save from Alan Smith against United in stoppage time meant we beat Manchester United again in a game that included a great save from Ryan Giggs. His save from Gareth Barry's free kick was arguably his best of the season but the winner was a save from more recent memory...

WINNER: JULIO BAPTISTA PENALTY SAVE

It's a game we need to win to stand any chance of Europe and Graham Poll has just awarded Arsenal a penalty. Julio Baptista steps up and strikes the ball, it looks a certain goal until the outstanding reflexes of David James enables him to push the ball out and keep us in the game and our UEFA Cup dream alive. It's just a shame that the save didn't mean more...

Pompey Gaffe of the Season

There were a huge amount of nominations for this award, so here's a list of them all to save your eyes from reading overload!

James vs Blackburn
1st minute goal at Tottenham
James vs Man City (H)
Signing Djimi Traore
Going all season without a natural left back
Keeping faith in Glen Johnson
Failing to sign a striker in January
Rio Ferdinand Own Goal (Not a Pompey gaffe, but a hilarious one nonetheless)
Watford Defeat
Galvanising Everton by singing Liverpool songs at Goodison Park
The Manuel Fernandes Saga

Despite the sheer amount of nominations, there were actually two winners of this award.

WINNERS: LOSING TO CHARLTON AT HOME/AWAY TACTICS

Everyone has Charlton at home as a home banker. They hadn't won away since beating us the season before at the back end of 2005 yet they came to Fratton Park, set up shop and outfought a disinterested Pompey team. Tony Adams said to Harry "they're here to be beaten, aren't they?" just to make the result look even worse.

Then we have the away tactics. Pompey play best when going forward yet so many times last season we played a 4-5-1 or a defensive 4-4-2 and ended up losing or drawing games we could have won had we shown the attacking endeavour we are capable of at home.
