Forward Thinking

If you watched the African Nations Cup last night you won't have been happy to see Kanu leave the field on a stretcher. His injury looks bad and it's very possible that he could be out for a long time which leaves us with only two out-and-out strikers.

One of those strikers is yet to find the net at Premier League level and whilst only Emmanuel Adebayor and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more in the league than Benjani, the Zimbabwean scores his goals in bursts rather than on a more consistent basis and the majority of his goals have come against teams with very poor defensive records.

I think it's safe to say that we need another striker, but who?

Harry Redknapp has once again told the press how much he'd like to have Peter Crouch in his team but the lanky striker has said he is happy at Liverpool and I doubt that Rafael Benitez would be willing to sell him.

Jermain Defoe, another Harry favourite has said he is staying at Tottenham whilst Fred looks like he is staying with Lyon and we "couldn't afford him" anyway according to Redknapp.

The Baros bid is interesting, but I'm not sure Alain Perrin would want to let him go and play for a manager who had less than flattering things to say about him. I'm not sure what his price tag would be either but I'd guess at £5 million upwards.

Bobby Zamora is another name that has been linked with a move to Fratton Park and most Pompey fans aren't keen on the idea. His scoring record for West Ham isn't actually that bad. He scored eleven goals for the struggling Hammers last season and is quite a skilful player who could be a useful acquisition for us.

I'm struggling to think of other strikers who are available that we could sign. Perhaps we could look to the "big four" for loans? Theo Walcott, Denilson, Claudio Pizzaro, Park Ji-Sung? I'm just throwing names out there who might be a possible loan target.

There don't seem to be many options from abroad either as Eidur Gudjohnsen is likely to stay at Barcelona whilst the Mateja Kezman speculation has died down.

Heerenveen's Alfonso Alves is name being linked with several Premier League clubs because of his outstanding scoring record in the Dutch League, so he could be worth a punt.

Harry has said a striker is his top priority though who he's going to sign is anyone's guess right now. I guess we will have to wait and see as the search goes on...
