Portsmouth made their first signing of the summer as preparation for the 2004/2005 season is underway, snapping up Newcastle full-back Andy Griffin on a Bosman free.

Andy Griffin made his name as a teenager excelling for First Division Stoke City, earning England Under-18 and Under 21 caps during his time in the Potteries, before departing from the soon to be relegated side in January 1998 to join Newcastle United.

Although inital progress was slow, under Sir Bobby Robson and became an integral part of the side that went on a Champions's League run in 2003, scoring the winning goal against Juventus.

However injury has destroyed his latest season and despite starting in the Magpie's final game of the season at Liverpool, it was his first apperance since the 0-0 draw with Bolton at St James Park way back on September 20th, 2003.

However Griffin, still only 25, has the kind of pedigree that suggests if he puts his injury troubles behind him, he will be a massive asset for Portsmouth over the next few years.
