see that space behind the ground...
An official announcement is finally expected this week as Pompey put together the finishing touches to the plans for the new stadium. Other options in the city - most notably Hilsea Gasworks - have been decided not be be economically viable and the club believes that the plans to rotate the ground to be the most sensible option.

Planning permission has been granted for a 39,000 stadium that will follow the mould of Ewood Park in Blackburn. Three brand new stands will be built with the current Fratton End being turned around and extended, forming the centre piece of the new multi million pound development. It is hoped that initial building could commence as early as April next year but will definitely be under way by the close season.

Peter Storrie completely redeveloped Upton Park in his time at West Ham and is now looking to repeat that success at Pompey. Mandaric purchased land in the Goods Yard last year and the new stadium will lie on this land - linking up with the Pompey centre that is currently being completed. Ewood Park was built in 14 months and the club hope that the new stadium will be ready for the start of the 2004-2005 season.

This is a move that will delight most fans with Fratton Park being seen as the clubs spiritual home. The council are also happy as a key part of the city is being regenerated and the club are delighted with this cost effective solution. It seems that once and for all, Pompey really will be playing in surroundings fit for the current performances of the team.
