Everton Vs Portsmouth Preview

Last updated : 29 August 2008 By Jim Bonner
Pompey travel to Merseyside tomorrow in an attempt to get off the mark in the Premier League.

Our record at Goodison Park is far from impressive and Everton are a team that we rarely enjoy success against so optimism isn't high heading into this clash.

Former Pompey striker Yakubu has already scored twice for the Toffees and he will probably play as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation. David Moyes should hand a debut to right back Lars Christian Jacobsen but Segunda Castillo and Louis Saha can't play for their new club yet.

Jermain Defoe has been struggling with a virus but should be fit to play tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise me to see Redknapp play the same team that started against Manchester United as his options are still rather limited at the moment.

What worries me most is that we have absolutely no creativity in our midfield and haven't looked like scoring so far in the league. Defoe and Crouch need to deliver some time soon as we aren't going to score from midfield, but then grabbing any sort of goal against a defence that contains Joseph Yobo and Joeleon Lescott will be difficult.

The only real plus point we can take into this game is that Everton haven't looked too bright themselves after suffering an opening day defeat to Blackburn and then only narrowly beating a poor West Brom side.

Tim Cahill and Stephen Pienaar are out so we won't have to worry about goals coming from nowhere and persistent fouling and getting away with it this time.

Our defence is going to have to stay strong to keep the likes of Yak and Arteta out and if Everton are playing five in midfield then I fear we may lose the battle in the centre of the park unless Harry decides to play five in midfield himself.

I'd take a point right now if it was offered to me whilst three points should kill the doom and gloom settling at the club seeing as we haven't celebrated a league win since early April. Defeat is the most likely outcome though...

Last Time: Everton 3 Pompey 1

Pompey got off to the worst possible start as Yakubu netted in the first minute of the game but we equalised when Defoe got the faintest of touches on Glen Johnson's cross.

We looked the better side until Tim Cahill appeared from nowhere to restore Everton's lead and then Yakubu got the better of Campbell to finish us off.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Home Win (1-0)
Sky Sports: Home Win (1-0)
Soccernet: Home Win

My Prediction: I am almost resigned to Yakubu putting one past us and without any creativity I don't know how we are going to get the ball to Crouch and Defoe without the hopeless hoof ball tactic. If we get a result it'll be down to persistence and luck.

Everton 2 Pompey 0
