Euro-Africa Round Up

Not everyone at Portsmouth FC were sitting around and twiddling their thumbs this weekend. Some of our players were on important international duty. Here's how they got on:

Niko Kranjcar played the full 90 minutes for Croatia in a 2-1 win over Macedonia. This result puts England under more pressure as Croatia are now top of England's qualifying group following yet another dull, dreary game that ended up 0-0. Still, at least the qualification campaign might be exciting now we're not virtually assured of going to Austria or Switzerland.

In Africa, Kanu scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Nigeria over Uganda to give Berti Vogts a win for his first game in charge and keep their 100% record in qualifying as well as top spot in the group.

Benjani suffered contrasting fortunes as Zimbabwe were held to a 1-1 draw with Morocco and still sit bottom of their qualifying group with just a single point.

Lomana LuaLua's DR Congo did not play against Ethiopia because the game was postponed due to the recent violence in Kinshasa. More than 100 people are feared dead after the riots and the Ethiopian team didn't even attempt to fly into the country.

Djimi Traore and his Mali side were dealt a blow in qualifying as they were held to a 1-1 draw with minnows Benin.

In other news, Andy Awford's Testimonial ended in a 2-2 draw with John Durnin scoring for both the Pompey XI and the first-half opposition comprising of many fan favourites and players from the promotion winning side including Paul Walsh, Steve Stone and Tim Sherwood.

Pompey reserve Marc Wilson had put the the Pompey XI a goal up but were held to a draw as in the second half Corporal Punishment slotted home an equaliser for the 1992 FA Cup Semi-Finalists side containing the likes of Kit Symons, Darren Anderton and of course; Sir Alan Knight.
