Dull Draw At Hull

Pompey ended a drab and tedious encounter at the KC Stadium with ten men after Glen Johnson was sent off late on.

This may have been the most dire game I've seen all season in terms of entertainment value. Chances were few and far between whilst both sides played far too much hoofball and referee Chris Foy not allowing the game to flow.

Both sides only had one real good chance in the first half as Younes Kaboul headed over from about three yards out whilst Manucho volleyed over the bar when he was in space.

The main talking point was Glen Johnson's lashing out at Kamil Zayatte early on which earned him a yellow card. He then brought down Geovanni minutes later and was walking the tightrope since then and it was inevitable he would be sent off later in the game.

You have to say that the "foul" given against Johnson for his second yellow was extremely harsh as if anything, the Hull player commited the foul by kicking him!

However, in truth he could have gone earlier for a mistimed challenge and I don't know why Paul Hart didn't substitute Glen earlier because everyone in the ground could see a red card coming for him eventually.

As for goalmouth action in the second half, David James was only called into action once after a defensive error let Craig Fagan have a header from point blank range.

Both sides huffed and puffed for a winner and Pompey almost stole the win as Hermann Hreidarsson hit the post with a header in the last second of the game.

That would have been harsh on Hull though as both teams were equally as poor as each other and a draw was a fair result from this awful match. In fact, the biggest cheer was when the tannoy announcer said that Southampton had lost 3-2 at home to Charlton.

Both sides will see this game as an opportunity missed to grab a vital win. Hull fans will be disappointed that their team couldn't beat ten-man Pompey at home whilst I'm disappointed that we resorted to hoofball and failed to take the game to the worst home side in the division.

On the other hand it's a point away from home having ended the game with a clean sheet andten men with possibly the most uncreative centre midfield partnership of all time in Mullins and Hughes and a centre forward playing left wing and a right back playing right wing.

And despite dropping a place in the league down to 16th due to wins for Blackburn and Stoke, we have widened the gap between ourselves and the relegation zone to four points after Newcastle lost yesterday.

We now have two massive home games in succession against West Brom and Bolton coming up. We'll be without Johnson for the visit of the Baggies to Fratton Park but that doesn't worry me too much as Younes Kaboul has been solid at right back and Jermaine Pennant will be fully fit too.

If we win those two games (and we really should) then that puts us on 39 points and safety will be within touching distance.

If not, then we may just look at games like yesterday's and wonder what might have been if we had shown more ambition and not dropped two very valuable points.
