Dreadful Pompey Stunned By Bees

Portsmouth have been unceremoniously dumped out of the Carling Cup after an embarrassing home defeat to League Two side Barnet.

Words can't really describe how dreadful Pompey were as they were outfought and outplayed by a team two divisions below them. Despite Hreidarsson and Ben-Haim being missing on international duty, there should still have been enough quality and experience to get through to the second round.

That shouldn't take anything away from Barnet's performance, however, as they were much the better side and should have won by a larger margin. Izale McLeod was guilty of wasting a glorious chance when he was sent through on goal following an early spell of Pompey pressure but Stephen Henderson blocked his effort.

Pompey's best chance of the first half came when Aaron Mokoena headed the returning Liam Lawrence's free kick over the bar but Lawrie Sanchez's side took the lead when some shambolic defending saw Mark Hughes head in Mark Marshall's cross.

McLeod should have doubled the Bees' lead when he was through on goal again but Henderson again did well to block his shot. Jason Price then headed the ball into the net but was flagged offside as Pompey were booed off at half-time by the meagre home crowd.

Pompey didn't improve in the second half as Barnet worked hard to close down our players who resorted to the dire long ball game and also gave away cheap free kicks in frustration.

The hosts' best chance came when Halford's header was gathered on the line by Bees 'keeper Dean Brill despite the best efforts of Kanu to try and bundle the ball into the net.

But Steve Cotterill's men had no answer to Barnet's organisation and were indebted to Henderson who had to make a couple more saves to keep the score from becoming even more embarrassing.

There was no doubt that this was a disgraceful performance from the Pompey players. The defence as a unit were all over the place, the midfield couldn't pass the ball forward and Kitson was woeful up front on his own.

The only positive to come from this defeat is that the squad won't be stretched by playing in a competition that Pompey are not going to win but the manner of the defeat was totally unacceptable, especially when many people paid £17 to watch that "performance".

I hope Steve Cotterill keeps them in for extra training ahead of Saturday's big match against Brighton because if tonight's showing is anything to go by then we're in for a thrashing.
