Defensive woe for Pompey

After two strikers in as many days, Pompey have turned to their rearguard in an attempt to shore up the team. Two central defenders were targeted - one Pompey turned away and the other was turned away by the Department of Employment.

The club had hoped to sign Eric Ejiofor but he has been unable to get a work permit. Players outside the EU have to have played at least 75% of matches for their international team. Eric has played 72.72% of matches for Nigeria so it is likely that Pompey will appeal. The young defender has been paired with Taribo West in the Nigeria team and will travel to the World Cup this year. He is anxious to ply his trade in Europe and it is thought that Harry Redknapp has worked hard to attract him to Pompey.

Another defender, Lee Wilkie will not be coming to Pompey after the club didn't follow up its interest in the Scottish youngster. The Dundee player impressed whilst on trial at pre-season but obviously doesn't quite have the magic ingredient to improve the squad - especially with youngsters such as Zamperini and Buxton in the first team frame.

Mandaric is anxious for the club to hit the magic fifty points so we can start planning for next season. A new board raised outside the goods yard showing a stadium has raised fans expectations that an announcement will follow. The roller coaster ride of following Pompey reaches a new height...
