Deal Or No Deal? - Fratton Faithful

Deal Or No Deal?

Last updated : 16 August 2006 By Jim Bonner
It's been a struggle to get in quality players this summer with the club being linked to nearly every name available, and then almost every name unavailable. Deals have been in the pipeline for quite some time but now we're getting towards the end of August, it's becoming slightly clearer who will be playing in a Pompey shirt this season.

For starters; Kanu still hasn't officially signed yet but it's the worst kept secret in Portsmouth that he'll sign for us eventually. I will assume tommorow that he will be officially unveiled as the latest addition to the Pompey squad.

The long but almost forgotten saga regarding Manuel Fernandes looks set to end very soon with the result being that he will become a Pompey player sooner rather than later. It's reported that the 20 year old's fitness is almost up to standard now and he could sign before Saturday for around £8.5 million.

On the other hand, Juan Vargas; the Peruvian left back probably won't be signing for Pompey after all. Despite training with the club for a while now, it seems that there are certain payment issues involving dodgy South American agents wanting more money for the player which Pompey are obviously not prepared to pay. The local rag says the deal is off but I feel we'll have to wait for future developments on this one.

It looks like we're going to miss out on Sylvain Distin too as he looks set to join Middlesbrough from Man City after they accepted a bit for the French defender. Ryan Nelsen has also signed a new contract at Blackburn to dispel the stupid rumours that he was on his way here. Either way it looks like Stefanovic will be in the team folks...

There have been some other links to strikers that could be easily dismissed. Obafemi Martins; the 21 year old (or 28 year old if dodgy rumours are true) Nigerian striker has been linked as has Diego Forlan of Villareal and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Ajax who scored two on his Holland debut against the Republic of Ireland tonight.

Tommorow I plan to post my Premiership Prediction article as well as a competition for all you good readers to take part in! Until then, I bid you goodnight.
