Deadline Day Special

Last updated : 31 January 2011 By Jim Bonner
The transfer window has now shut with no new arrivals through the door but no departures either.

So, Pompey now have two midfielders who will be paid for doing nothing for the rest of the season and have now been lumbered with Tal Ben-Haim and his massive wages, although it is another defender on the books.

The emergency loan window opens next week so there is still opportunity for Steve Cotterill to bring players in on a short-term basis but the inactivity today has done absolutely nothing for the long-term prospects of Portsmouth FC.

Here is a confirmed list of transfers in and out along with a short review what might have happened to the Pompey players still at the club:

Confirmed Transfers In

Jonathan Hogg: Has joined on loan from Aston Villa for the remainder of the season.

Ritchie De Laet: Has joined on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the season.

Liam Lawrence: Signed a three-and-a-half year permanent deal on January 1st.

Tal Ben-Haim: Never returned to West Ham and so now returns to his parent club along with his massive salary.

Confirmed Transfers Out

John Utaka: Has signed for Montpellier for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.

Tommy Smith:
Has signed permanently for QPR on a two-and-a-half year deal for a fee around the region of £1.5 million.

Matt Ritchie: Steve Cotterill has decided that the Gosport lad is not good enough to play in the Championship and has now completed a permanent move to Swindon for a reported £200,000 rising to £250,000 based on appearances and such.

Current Squad (Owned)

Jamie Ashdown: Signed a new deal in the summer and was never linked anywhere.

Darryl Flahavan: Is expected to continue to sign month-long contracts as backup to Ashdown, with the latest extension signed in January.

Aaron Mokoena: Was sought after in the summer but signed a new contract earlier in the year and remains at the club.

Hermann Hreidarsson: Was linked to Rangers but a move never materialised.

Joel Ward: Has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract with the option to extend it by another year.

Ricardo Rocha: Was always unlikely to move given that no other club wanted him in the summer.

Hayden Mullins: Is under contract at Portsmouth until the end of the 2011/2012 season.

Michael Brown: Was linked with a deadline day move to Crystal Palace but it never materialised. It's highly doubtful he'll ever play for Portsmouth again.

Richard Hughes: Like Brown, Hughes isn't likely to play for Pompey again. The Scot has offered to take a 50% pay cut but it seems that the board have decided that even this is still too much money to pay him.

Tom Kilbey: Millwall kindly waived the £50,000 they were supposed to recieve once the youngster made an appearance for Pompey, and it's likely he will stay at Fratton Park as Steve Cotterill deems him good enough to play for the club.

Danny Webber: Still recovering from injury so wasn't going anywhere.

David Nugent: Has "guaranteed" he will stay until the end of the season and has stuck to that statement. Now to get that new contract signed.

Dave Kitson: Only signed in the summer and was never linked anywhere.

Nadir Ciftci: Steve Cotterill has revealed that he will leave Pompey in the summer after rejecting a new contract that has been on the table for over four months.

Apparently, the youngster already has a destination in mind when the summer arrives and so Pompey will only receive "training compensation" for him.

Kanu: At the age of 62, is surely going nowhere now!

Current Squad (Loaned)

Greg Halford: Has confirmed he has extended his loan until the end of the season.

Carl Dickinson: As bad as he might be, we couldn't afford to send anyone back at the moment!

Ibrahima Sonko: Ditto Dickinson.

Loaned Out

Marlon Pack: Deemed not good enough by the Pompey manager, so may sign for Cheltenham permanently.
