Deadline Day Deals

Michael Smith has joined League One side Northampton Town on loan until the end of the season whilst Wolves youngster Aaron Simpson has arrived on loan as transfer deadline day draws to a close.

It's slightly surprising to see Smith go, especially to a team a league above Pompey, but the Pompey fans' reactions to his recent performances have obviously affected his confidence so much that he is unable to perform at Fratton Park nowadays. Perhaps he will regain his goalscoring prowess at Sixfields?

Whilst it's good that Paul Cook has signed a right back in Simpson, nobody knows how the 19-year-old will fare in league football given that he is yet to make a senior appearance for his Championship parent club. Here's hoping he doesn't turn out to be another Alex Wynter.

Hopefully this means Gareth Evans will be able to play in his more natural position and see Carl Baker dropped to the bench after his recent lacklustre showings.

With Eoin Doyle also in today, this could be a pivotal day in Pompey's season. They may have dropped to 6th in League Two after today's results but the game in hand on Luton and Exeter could be crucial whilst Plymouth's defeat at Yeovil means second place still isn't totally out of reach just yet.

A good result at Wycombe on Saturday will see the mood turn once again in what is becoming a season of constantly differing emotions.
