Deadline Day Deals

Pompey have signed Swindon striker Michael Smith on a 93-day-loan whilst goalkeeper Paul Jones has been loaned to Crawley for a month.

Smith, 24, stands at a huge six foot and four inches tall and was a regular goalscorer in Swindon's run to the play-offs last season. However, he has fallen out of favour and hasn't found the net once during this campaign.

Therefore, the loan is a bit of a gamble but Paul Cook's record in the transfer market has been excellent and so we should trust that he has made the right decision. Smith will certainly add a new dimension to Pompey's attack but he isn't too bad with his feet, either.

Jones needs some game time and now that Brian Murphy has recovered from concussion, he has decided to rejoin his old club to regain his match fitness.

Matt Tubbs was expected to move on during the transfer window with a loan move to Eastleigh and a permanent switch to either AFC Wimbledon or Bristol Rovers mooted, but that hasn't happened.

Pompey were also going to make a move for yet another Sheffield United player in attacking midfielder Stefan Scougall but it failed to materialise.

Still, the transfer window closing doesn't really mean anything as the "emergency" loan window opens again next Monday and it's expected these prospective deals may take place then.

Let's just hope that Smith can do the business and score some important goals between now and (nearly) the end of the season.
