Deadline Day Aftermath

I sat there watching Sky Sports News yesterday afternoon with my fingers crossed that certain players wouldn't leave and that Avram Grant would bring in one or two new faces.

It's safe to say that come not long after 5pm, I was a very disappointed man.

Stoke had swiped our highly rated young goalkeeper for a paltry £3.5 million that just highlights how desperate Pompey were for cash. Mark Jacob said that it was Begovic's choice to leave but I don't believe him for a second.

Why would Begovic join a club where he is going to be second best goalkeeper at best when he was considered number one at Pompey due to David James' past injury problems?

The silver lining there was that James didn't go too but with this clause in his contract that activates a lucrative new deal if he plays 10 more games for the club, he still might not be played at the end of the season unless the club can renegotitate that clause.

But James is really going to have to step up now because the defence he has in front of him has been significantly weakened with the sale of Younes Kaboul and nobody was brought in to replace him yesterday.

However, former Benfica and Spurs centre back Ricardo Rocha is a free agent after being released by Standard Liege and is expected to sign for Pompey today.

There may be more to come but after the reports of Manuel Fernandes and Mateja Kezman coming to the club, I was left disappointed that these turned out to be untrue. Once again, I don't believe the reports that Pompey missed out on Fernandes due to being late with paperwork, but then come to think about it, this is Pompey after all!

If there are any positives to take from yesterday it's that the fire sale didn't take place. Nadir Belhadj was heavily tipped to leave the club along with many other players, whilst Aruna Dindane is now staying after his move to Blackburn fell through.

But with only Quincy Owusu-Abeyie coming in, we have not strengthened anywhere near enough to suggest a realistic chance of staying up. This is now Mission: Impossible and Avram Grant is now Ethan Hunt.

I didn't spend all day staring at my TV though. I was up early to head down to Fratton Park for my ticket to the much anticipated Southampton match.

I arrived at 8am where the queue was already halfway down the alley and I didn't get to the ticket office until 11:30. My toes were cold but the fans were in high spirits, although we began to worry when the online sales began.

Especially as some people in the queue had people at home to go online as an "insurance policy" and after just half an hour of waiting in an online queue, they got their tickets. I, like the people around me, didn't trust the online ticket service so to hear that fans had got their tickets sooner than those who were freezing their toes off outside Fratton Park was disheartening.

However, my main concern is that there were some people in the queue with 20 or more season tickets to buy on behalf of everyone else. I thought that was absolutely ridiculous and the club should have imposed a limit on how many any one person could buy.

It's for this reason that some people who had been waiting in line for over three hours only to be turned away. I feel great sympathy for these supporters who could actually be bothered to physically go down to the ticket office.
