Day One Disaster

Last updated : 17 August 2008 By Jim Bonner
A rampant Chelsea tore a dreadful Portsmouth side apart at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season - and many Pompey fans are already angry after what was a complete demolition of a disjointed team.

The writing was on the wall from the start. Harry once again started Papa Bouba Diop on the right and gave Younes Kaboul his debut in centre midfield.
So once again we had no width which Chelsea took advantage of and Kaboul certainly won't be playing in midfield again judging by that performance.

Yes, Scolari's side were excellent and their first goal hammered home that fact after a crafty through ball caught the Pompey defence cold and Joe Cole slotted in the first goal.

The second goal was an awful one to concede after David James needlessly came off his line, left the goal exposed and when the ball was crossed in, Glen Johnson was outjumped by Nicolas Anelka on the goal-line for an easy header.

We couldn't string two passes together and constantly gave the ball away as our strikers had no service and the midfield were second to every ball. Only some confusion in the box gifted us half an opportunity at the end of the first half that never came to anything.

Then just to rub salt in the wounds, Sylvain Distin is harshly punished for "handball" in the box right before half time. Frank Lampard duly dispatches the penalty and the game is well and truly over.

After the break Chelsea were happy to cruise along and could have had more goals as Pompey continued to lack ideas and couldn't get the ball to the service starved front two.

Scolari's side added the icing to the cake when Deco curled in a fourth that Jamo should have saved in honesty. Kaboul had a chance to add a bit of respectability to the scoreline late on but his shot was saved.

What made matters worse was that Diarra went off injured and that once again too many players performed way below par and once again we created very little.

People will say that we were unlucky as we were playing a side galvanised by a new manager and wanting to prove a point after failing to win anything last season.

But let's not forget that we had one of the best defensive records last campaign, finished 8th and won the FA Cup. We didn't get beat by four goals at all last season so to suffer such a drastic defeat after such a pathetic performance was very disappointing.

What is more frustrating is that we have to wait eight days to put this result out of our minds but Manchester United will be fired up after their own disappointing draw at home to Newcastle today.

This game has clearly shown that a lot of work still needs to be done if we are to challenge for the top 6 and that we are still a light year away from challenging the top 4.

Hopefully Harry sorts it out before the doom merchants come out and claim we will be battling relegation. This has been a clear wake up call to us all.
