Club legend Ernie Butler dies

Probably the majority of Pompey fans are too young to remember Ernie Butler in goal but a man who was in goal when Pompey won the Championship for two consecutive seasons is a True Blue hero.

Ernie signed in 1938 and was described by his teamates as 'the best' between 1948 - 1950, the most famous period in Pompey's history, he played every game and kept and incredible 82 clean sheets in 240 appearances. He retired in 1953 after breaking his wrist in a reserve game.

Ernie was recently in 'The News' after losing his championship medal whilst out shopping - the medal meant so much to him that he always carried it around with him - luckily the medal was found and returned.

There will be a one minute's silence in memory of Ernie who was a much-loved character and servant to Pompey, at Saturday's match against Barnsley at Fratton Park.

Fratton Faithful would like to offer its condolences and prayers to a true Pompey hero.
