Clarke Loan Confirmed

Pompey have confirmed the loan signing of Matt Clarke on loan from Ipswich Town until January.

The 18-year-old had already featured in several pre-season matches and is now officially a Portsmouth player until 2016. He's a very tall player and it's expected that he will form a partnership with Christian Burgess in the heart of Pompey's defence although he'll be more likely to head the ball out of danger rather than pass it.

Whilst Clarke may have talent he lacks experience given that he only has four professional appearances to his name and with Burgess fairly young also, there is still a significant lack of leadership at the back of this new Portsmouth team.

Although if Ben Davies arrives as expected then he will bring some much needed knowhow to the current youthful backline and he would be welcome at the club given that the only other option at the moment is to play Adam Webster at right back and that's hardly ideal.

With Paul Robinson signing for AFC Wimbledon, the captain's armband has now passed to Michael Doyle who now has a job to ensure that the players behind him remain organised and communicate well with each other.

Hopefully a couple of new faces can arrive during the week to give the squad a more "complete" look ahead of Saturday's curtain raiser against Dagenham.

In other news, it's a nice touch from EA games to pay homage to Pompey fan Simon Humber by including Fratton Park as a playable stadium in FIFA 16. Simon was a creative director for the FIFA series but tragically lost his life to cancer earlier this year and so the staff working on the game worked with Pompey to get the ground into the newest edition of FIFA.
