Cancelled Out

We're getting used to this aren't we? Another game at Fratton Park without any side of the ground cheering a goal. Everton held out for a draw in a closely contested game that contained was high on work-rate but low on quality.

Prior to the game there was a huge blunder by Roger the pitchside announcer. When the teams came out of the tunnel he said "Please welcome Manchester City and Portsmouth!" That mistake wasn't received too well and he got the "You don't know what you're doing!" chants thrown at him.

After that, there was a one minute applause for the late Graham Paddon who was part of the management teams of Alan Ball and Jim Smith during two spells at Pompey. The applause was warmly received but unfortunately the result wasn't.

Sulley Muntari came closest with a couple of free kicks and Niko Kranjcar was inches away from tapping in a winner. Everton's best chance came when the ball broke to Leon Osman who was on his own in the box but he miscontrolled the ball when he probably would have scored.

There isn't really much else to talk about regarding the players. We defended very well on the whole, as the likes of Arteta and Cahill were kept quiet whilst the returning Yakubu was awful. It wasn't until Andy Johnson came on that the visitors carried any real threat.

Harry did change things when he subbed Kanu on for Utaka and moved Benjani to the right wing but the pattern of the game didn't change as we were close to scoring a few times whilst being wary of Everton's counter-attack.

Unfortunately, the 4-5-1 system didn't work too well and our set pieces were our biggest threat. We gave the ball away too cheaply, didn't have enough support when going forward whilst Benjani was constantly out-muscled by Yobo and Lescott.

The main talking point of the game will be the inept performance of referee Peter Walton. How Stephen Pienaar wasn't sent off after an early booking and several yellow card offences afterwards, I don't know. Tim Cahill could have also seen a straight red for a nasty challenge and the "You don't know what you're doing!" chants returned especially for Walton who had a poor game.

Despite our third consecutive 0-0 draw at home there are some positives to take. The main one is that we didn't get beaten and nearly all the other results were in our favour other than Blackburn winning, so we're still well in contention for Europe. That's also a massive ten games unbeaten in the league now, with eight clean sheets kept in that time.

However, it won't be the events at Fratton Park that will be talked about on Sunday as the spotlight has been stolen from us by Sean Gale's Havant & Waterlooville side.

The Hawks will join Pompey in the draw for the third round of the FA Cup after going to Meadow Lane and winning 1-0 to knock Notts County out of the competition. So there's a possibility that Pompey could be playing Havant in a competitive match for the first time, or maybe the Hawks could end up going to Liverpool or Chelsea. They could even get Southampton at home so check Fratton Faithful tomorrow and the site will be updated as soon as the draw is made.

As for Pompey, well I never thought I'd say this but with our floundering form at home, I've never been more grateful for our away record!

Pompey Player Ratings

Noe Pamarot: 7 - Solid once again.

Papa Bouba Diop: 6 - Gave the ball away too often.

Sulley Muntari: 7 - Forced a great save from Tim Howard with his free kick, but still needs to improve his passing.

John Utaka: 5 - Ineffective again.

Niko Kranjcar: 7 - Great touch and skill, but should have scored that toe poke.
